What are the benefits of buying organic clothes for your baby?
The benefits of buying organic clothing include
- Better health for the consumer especially babies –
- Soothing for eczema sufferers
- A baby’s skin is five times thinner than an adult therefore making it more absorbent.
- Great for kids with sensitive skin
- Everyone, especially parents are much more aware of environmental issues and are looking towards the organic lifestyle as the way to go. They can be rest assured that the cotton they purchase from us will have no trace of chemical residue on them. If your child has got sensitive skin, then you are going to be very happy to have found a fabric that does not exacerbate the problem.
- Better health for the front line farmers – According to the WHO it is estimated that 20,000 deaths occur in developing countries each year from pesticide poisoning and many of these are attributed to conventional cotton production. Organic cotton is produced without nasty chemicals. It is manufactured using only natural products to halt the pests. Crop rotation and intercropping are used and this removes the need for artificial fertilizers.
- Organic cotton does carry a small price premium. However you may ask yourself if it is worth it? I say absolutely YES! Let me give you a few well known facts about natural organic cotton versus conventional cotton – you can then make up your own mind!
Facts about natural organic cotton
- Certified organic cotton is cotton grown without the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers.
- It is free from formaldehyde finishes and toxic dyes.
- Organic cotton is soft, hard wearing, durable, extremely breathable and still remains beautifully soft even after repeated washes.
- Organic cotton is grown in fields where the use of pesticides has been discontinued for at least 3 years.
- Successful organic farming is much more labour intensive. Using good bugs to halt the bad bugs and crop rotation and other natural methods, the organic cotton farmers can go about their work without the worry of being poisoned by toxic chemicals.
- This intensive natural farming pays dividends when the end product is gorgeously soft cotton, free from chemicals, just perfect for your baby’s delicate skin.
Facts about conventional cotton
- It takes approx one small cup of chemicals to make one T-shirt.
- This delicate crop is sprayed with chemicals up to 30 to 40 times a season.

- Many of the pesticides and chemicals used in the manufacturing of cotton are petroleum based and therefore stay in the garment even after washing.
- The health of the frontline farmers are compromised by this un-necessary cocktail of chemicals.
